In the age of technology, managing patient records and databases is central to the effective and efficient delivery of health care. By earning a bachelor’s degree in health informatics and information management from the University of Central Florida, you will position yourself for a career in the heart of the health care industry.

What sets our curriculum apart is that it is designed to present a correlation between classroom theory and practical experience. This means that after learning about business management, systems analysis, medical coding, and computer applications in health care, students will apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. During the summer term of their senior year, students gain hands-on experience by interning at an affiliated health care facility, in their final semester.

The Health Information Management Technology (HIMT) associate’s degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). CAHIIM is the accrediting organization for degree-granting programs in Health Informatics and Health Information Management (HIM) educational. The Master of Health Administration in Community Care (MHA (CC)) is the first Canadian graduate degree in this dynamic and growing sector. There is a large demand for graduate-prepared managers in private, public and not-for-profit organizations that plan, coordinate and deliver clinical and supportive health care in the community.

Students who graduate from our program are eligible to apply to write the National Registration Examination, administered by the American Health Information Management Association, to qualify as a Registered Health Information Administrator.

The Health Informatics and Information Management (BS) may be completed fully online, although not all elective options or program prerequisites may be offered online. Newly admitted students choosing to complete this program exclusively via UCF online classes may enroll with a reduction in campus-based fees.

The undergraduate health informatics and information management program at the University of Central Florida is an upper-division program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree.

This program is limited access, which means that acceptance to the university does not constitute admission to the health informatics and information management program. Enrollment in the program is restricted due to the student demand for admission to the major, limited clinical sites and accreditation guidelines. Students who wish to enroll in the program must fill out a separate application to the program prior to March 1 for summer or fall admission and prior to Oct. 1 for spring admission.

Interested applicants must fill out the following forms:

• Criminal Background Check – If you do not live in Florida, your state’s law enforcement will need to provide a background check.

The Health Informatics and Information Management program is comprehensive, to include a mandatory UCF-affiliated internship experience at the end of the curriculum. The internship experience is designed to provide HIIM students an opportunity to apply classroom learning to real world projects at real health care organizations. This is a highly coordinated effort that has resulted in tremendous success for the program, its students and its community partners. Many students have secured full time employment from their internship sites.

The Department of Health Management and Informatics has a dedicated internship director to oversee all internship efforts for the undergraduate HIIM and graduate healthcare informatics programs. Prerequisites

The internship course is HIM 4838: Management Affiliation, and has the following requirements:

• Student to be in good standing
• Student has successfully completed Professional Practice Experience (PPE1 and PPE2)
• Student has successfully completed all requirements in the Internship Orientation course, HIM 4998 (conduct one semester prior to the actual internship course).

Securing an Internship

Before signing up for an internship, you must complete an online internship orientation course that is offered in the semester prior to the internship course. During orientation, you will receive an affiliation list with contact information for the various internship locations. Once you have chosen the organizations for which you would like to intern, you must follow these steps to secure an internship:

• Review opportunities provided by your internship director
• Review organizations listed on the affiliation list
• Coordinate with your internship director regarding applications
• Set up an interview
• Interview with the organization
• Secure the internship
• Submit all required forms to Canvas for approval

Once you have secured an internship, you will be able to enroll in the internship course.

Internship Requirements

The following are required components of the internship course: HIM 4838 Management Affiliation

• Provide exception internship service to your internship site for at least 160 hours
• Complete your portion of a “work product,” or final project, for the organization
• The course portion of the internship (e.g., all forms, deliverables, class presentations)
• Submit student and preceptor evaluations and all other required internship forms

Recipient Criteria:

• Must be enrolled as full-time or part-time undergraduate student, entering their senior year, in the health informatics and information management program
• Preference shall be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
• Must have an overall 2.8 GPA and 3.3 major GPA
• Must provide a current resume
• Must provide two (2) letters of reference with one letter of reference from each of the following:
  • Health Information Management faculty member
    • This letter should emphasize leadership qualities
  • Any other previous instructor or previous/present employer
• Must submit 250 word essay commenting on: (1) career path for the next five years, and (2) perception of the future of Health Informatics and Information Management

If you're interested in medicine, business, and the latest in computer technology, then a career in health information management may be just right for you. The health information management professional is responsible for maintaining components of health information systems under the rules of medical, administrative, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements in the health care delivery system.

In all types of health care facilities, the health information management technician possesses the technical knowledge and skills necessary to process, maintain, compile and report health information. This information is used in many ways, including reimbursement, facility planning, marketing, risk management, utilization management, quality assessment, and research.

Graduates of the CSCC HIMT associate’s degree program are eligible to sit for the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Registered Health Information Management Technician (RHIT) national certification examination. Upon successful completion of the certification examination, the graduate is awarded the RHIT credential.
